4-year degrees in 3 years? UGC considers flexible completion timeline
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is planning to let students finish 4-year degrees in 3 years, offering flexible timelines under the NEP, as per UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is looking to shake things up in higher education by allowing students to finish four-year degree programmes in just three years.
UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar shared this news during a conference for autonomous colleges at IIT Madras on Thursday.
Under the proposed changes, students would also have the option to complete three-year degrees in two-and-a-half years.
“We are planning to implement this from the next academic session,” Kumar announced, adding that capable students could gain up to a year with this faster track.
The policy aligns with recommendations from IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti and builds on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for greater flexibility in education. Detailed guidelines for this plan are expected soon.
While this option aims to benefit high-performing students, those needing more time won’t be left behind. Kumar clarified that the system would accommodate students who prefer a slower pace or need breaks during their studies. This flexibility ensures inclusivity while still promoting efficiency.
NEP’S IMPACT ON EDUCATION
Kumar also emphasised the NEP’s potential to transform the education system. Highlighting core goals like access, equity, and inclusivity, he called on higher education institutes (HEIs) to ensure affordability and support for all students.
“Educational institutions must ensure that higher education is affordable, fair, and supportive for our students to succeed,” Kumar said.
With the NEP officially launched on July 29, 2020, the UGC’s latest initiative aligns with its vision to modernise education while catering to diverse student needs.
