Many people pursue careers as doctors. It is well known that obtaining an MBBS degree is an extremely difficult process that calls for a great deal of discipline and concentration. Nevertheless, some extraordinary students decide to break down stereotypes and take the risky step of joining the government service even after earning their MBBS degrees.


Here are 5 IAS officers who dropped out of medical and got into civil services:


Arun Thamburaj: Arun, a native of Tamil Nadu, quit his job as a doctor to pursue a career in the IAS. He passed the UPSC CSE test in 2010, and on his second attempt in CSE 2012, he received an AIR 6. Thamburaj is now the Cuddalore collector for Tamil Nadu.

Roman Saini: At the age of 16, Roman Saini was able to pass the competitive AIIMS admissions test. At the age of 22, he passed the UPSC exam and was appointed an IAS officer. He was assigned to Madhya Pradesh as a district collector. He, however, was not satisfied with becoming an IAS official and instead desired to become an entrepreneur. In 2015, after leaving his position as an IAS officer, he co-founded Unacademy with Gaurav Munjal and Hemesh Singh.

Syed Sehrish Asgar: She completed his MBBS degree and later cleared the civil exam. Syed then left his IAS career to establish Global Healthcare Systems in 2010. She founded a Kolkata-based organisation to make quality healthcare accessible to rural areas. 

Sneha Agarwal: Sneha was born in Yamunanagar, Haryana. She graduated from AIIMs, New Delhi in 2009. She topped the CBSE Pre-Medical Test in 2004 and was ready to take training for the IRS in Nagpur. At the same time, she was preparing to take her 3rd IAS attempt. She secured AIR 1 in CSE 2011. She currently holds the position of Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana in Punjab.

K. Vijayakarthikeyan: Vijayakarthikeyan hails from Tamil Nadu. He completed his MBBS in 2009, cracked the UPSC CSE in 2010 and joined the IAS. He currently serves as the Secretary of the State Human Rights Commission in Tamil Nadu.
