Class 9 student slips to death in Boniyar

Minor was waiting for school bus when incident occurred, says official

Baramulla, Apr 01: A minor girl died after slipping into an irrigation canal in Perniya area of Boniyar in Baramulla district.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a minor girl identified as Rukaya Bashir daughter of Bashir Ahmad Ganaie resident of Nowpora Jagir slipped into the canal. 

The class 9 student was waiting for school bus along Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric power Project (LJHP) canal when she slipped and fell into the canal, he said. Soon after the incident, a search operation to retrieve her body was launched and body was retrieved. 

Water supply of the canal was stopped and it helped in fishing out the body, said the official. He said the body was handed over to her family after medico legal formalities were completed. Tehsildar Boniyar, Vikramjeet Singh said fencing would be carried out along the LJHP, especially at accident prone sites soon. 

He said he will write to the higher ups for an SDRF team for Boniyar so that people may not face any difficulties during such incidents—(KNO)
