Most Places Record Below Normal Temp In J&K, Leh Coldest In Ladakh At Minus 9.8°C


Srinagar, Nov 13 : Weather department on Sunday forecast light to moderate snowfall over higher reaches and some places in plains in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Weather is likely to turn cloudy as the day progresses today. From tonight (November 13) – November 15th, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy,” a meteorological department official said here, adding, “Light to moderate rain/snow is expected over higher reaches at most places. Some places in the plains may receive 1-2 inches of snow on November 14.”  

From November 15-18, he said, weather would be cloudy and from November 19-20𝙩𝙝, there is possibility of widespread light to moderate rain /snow. “The forecast confidence is upto 75%”, he added.

Among probable impacts, he said, snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Sadnatop, Mughal road etc on November 14 and 19-20th.

“Prior to embarking on a journey, people are advised to check the status of the road from traffic police,” he added.

Regarding the temperature, the official told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 0.8°C against 1.2°C on the previous night. The temperature was 0.4°C below normal for the summer capital during this time of the year, he said.

Qazigund recorded a low of minus 0.2°C against 2.5°C on the previous night. The temperature was 1.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

In Pahalgam, the mercury settled at minus 3.8°C against minus 3.7°C on the previous night and it was 2.6°C below normal for the south Kashmir resort, he said.

Kokernag recorded a low of 0.9°C against 2.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C below normal for the place, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.6°C against minus 4.0°C on the previous night, the official told GNS. It was 3.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the official said.

In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 1.4°C against minus 1.8°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 1.9°C below normal for the north Kashmir place, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 10.6°C against 10.2°C on the previous night. It was 2.8°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said. Banihal recorded a low of 4.8°C (0.7°C above normal), Batote 4.0°C (2.2°C below normal), Katra 10.2°C (below normal by 1.2°C) and Bhadarwah 1.3°C (below normal by 1.9°C).

In Kargil area of Ladakh, he said, the mercury settled at minus 3.4°C, Leh witnessed a low of minus 9.8°C and Drass, the world’s second coldest place after Siberia, recorded minimum of minus 9.5°C. (GNS)
