Book bank for underprivileged students in Handwara

In an effort to provide notebooks and study material free of cost to underprivileged students, several youth in in north Kashmir’s Handwara has set-up a book bank.
Talking to Media, a member of the group, Ghulam Hassan said the he along with his students took this initiative to provide the books and other study material to needy students who don’t have any source of income to carry further their education.
He said there any many well-wishers who are providing books.
“ Initially we established a mini-library for poor students who were visiting us to get their books.
We are not buying it from markets but our well-wishers are supporting us and we are acting only as mediators”, he said.
Ghulam Hassan continued that the students of this frontier district are facing manifold hardships as they are far away from competitive world and added the pandemic lockdown added to their woes.
Another core member Gowhar Reshi, told Media, recently we decided to conduct the General Aptitude Test (GAT) for the district, first we confined it to Handwara and we got a suggestion from various educations to vast it and made it inter district.
Earlier this group was known as Education Club Handwara, and after getting the huge response from public, the group has been renamed as Education Club Kashmir.
Few days back it conducted the GAT in which 1309 students got registration and out of them 1209 appeared in OMR based examination, Reshi, said they have charged Rs 50/ each student and they will provide laptop as 1st prize and will also provide cash prize to top 10 students.
“ The purpose of the exam was to help the students understand the areas of education that they need to be in touch with in order to cope up with the contemporary competitive scenario.
The exam was not any curriculum syllabus oriented but a mixture of general knowledge from different fields.
