Higher Education scenario in south-Kashmir’s Anantnag is in doldrums as at least thirtyfour secondary schools are without principals’ even as no proper staff available in the institutes across the district, much to the dismay of students. 

The callous approach by the authorities in filling up the pending vacancies, despite time to time appraisals from the local residents, is taking a serious toll on the academics.

According to figures accessed by Media , there are just twenty-six working school heads even as a whooping thirty-four institutes are without school heads besides no proper staff available. 

It is pertinent to
mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir government had in 
year 2018 ordered for up-gradation of a hundred schools to the Higher Secondary level and had also created 2322 
teaching and non-teaching 
posts including that of Principals’ for upgraded schools, however even after three years lapse, this south-Kashmir district remains an exception to all such measures. 

When contacted, an official concerned told Kashmir Glory that the School Education Department has delayed the posting of Principals in such Higher Secondary Schools as a result of adhoc(ism ), which according to the official, has affected the normal functioning and in one or the other way affecting the overall academic activities. 

Another official was of the opinion that the vacancies of higher secondary school principals have increased due retirements. 

“ There authorities have upgraded many schools to Higher Secondary level, however there are vacancies of lecturers lying unfulfilled for a long now”, he said adding that “We have just 850 lecturers, much less than we require.” 

Students at Government Higher Secondary school Khiram, Mahind, Srigufwara here in Dachnipora belt while talking to Media expressed their dismay on the overall education scenario in the district.

“ We are suffering at the hands of
authorities as they have
sanctioned us just four lecturers while we require at least twenty-two”, a student at Higher Secondary Khiram lamented.

“ We even don’t have a full-time school head here”, he said. 

Ruing the dearth of teaching faculty available, the student said that, “How is it possible for us to complete syllabus in such conditions.”

The students at Higher Secondary Mahind urged the school management to make some internal arrangements as to avoid their academic loss.

In-charge Principal at
Government Higher Secondary Khiram conceded that they have dearth of teaching faculty, which according to him, is creating problems in proper academic functioning at the institute. 

Meanwhile In-charge Principal Higher Secondary Mahind said that the school has six lecturers even as six posts lying vacant.

“ We did some internal
arrangements but Economics subject is pending as we don’t having any specialist for the said subject”, he said.

Pincipal Srigufwara in the meantime said that the academic activities have resumed at the institute after four days – in the backdrop of a student testing positive for Coronavirus last week. 

“ We are not allowing anyone to enter the school premises without masks and following guidelines properly to break the chain”. 

Talking about the staff
availability, the school head said that they required fourteen lecturers, out of which nine posts stand fulfilled over the time, however there still are five unfulfilled vacancies. 

“ We are doing everything possible as to ensure that the students don’t have to suffer”, he said. 

When contacted over thescenario, Director School Education told Media that the vacancies were created due to upgradation of around 100 schools to their Higher Secondaries in year 2018 and required some eleven hundred posts. 

Expressing hope that theunfulfilled vacancies will be done away with in coming month only, the official said that they incharge school heads to overlook the educational activities in each of the schools till then. 

“ The Department has already started to identify the vacant posts and will fill them in a time-bound manner”, the official reiterated.
