The damp squib made it impossible for Sri Lanka to get on the board in terms of World Cup encounters against Pakistan - a head-to-head that reads a morbid 0-7 against the Sri Lankans at the moment. It also ensured that the teams only get one point each and miss out on one-upping the other to make a climb up. Pakistan, considering the head-to-head record, and current form (on the back of an inspiring win against the hosts) would have backed themselves to come out on top and are likely to be exasperated by the volatile English weather.
With hail expected in the evening, and the unrelenting rain, the umpires and the officials decided to call off the match after a wait of over five hours given that the outfield and the weather showed no signs of improvement, and were certainly not fit for play. A point each means that Sri Lanka and Pakistan will temporarily attain the 3rd and 4th spots respectively for the time being, but will inevitably be toppled after the double-header on Saturday (June 8).
The Sri Lankan team will remain in Bristol, set to play Bangladesh on Tuesday (June 11), whereas Pakistan will be on their way to Taunton to play their next encounter against Australia on Wednesday (June 12).
